As Carnsight Communication’s newest addition, I thought it was a good idea to introduce myself. My name is Leigh-Ann and I’m very excited to be completing a 3-month internship with Jess and Steph here at Carnsight.

I’m a part-time post graduate student at Bath Spa University and have a BA Honours Degree in Creative Writing. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a fascination with communication and how we form relationships and so naturally, throughout my undergraduate studies, my attention began to turn towards PR. My favourite modules at University were Journalism, Marketing and Professional Writing and throughout my time studying, I realised that every lecturer within those subjects had referenced the world of PR.

After some personal research, as well as bombarding my university lecturers and career advisors with a lot of questions, I realised that PR was an industry that I knew I would enjoy, as well as one I believed I could succeed in. I soaked up all the PR knowledge that I could from my peers and tutors at University, and I reached a point where I realised the only way I was going to progress any further was to start learning on the job. I needed to see what PR work was like first-hand and learn on the go; I needed to push myself out of my comfort zone and get myself into the world of Public Relations.

When I heard about the Carnsight Communications PR Internship, I applied straight away. After reading the job requirements, for the first time ever, I felt like I actually fitted the description and that the skills and qualifications I have would be valued by the other members of the team. As a very recent graduate, I had faced a lot of rejection from a hodgepodge assortment of other roles in a variety of sectors due to lack of experience and I was thrilled to finally have a chance at gaining that very same experience that I had been lacking. I could learn the skills that I couldn’t get from reading a book or listening to a lecture; I could develop myself professionally and personally.

The internship at Carnsight Communications was exactly what I had been looking for. Not only were Jess and Steph welcoming and inspiring during the interview process, they assured me that, should I succeed in getting the internship, I would receive heaps of guidance and support in the role. Working for a small business that was local to me, particularly one founded and powered by women, was something that I’d wanted to do for a long time. The role at Carnsight not only offered the experience I was hoping to gain, but my values seemed to align well with the business’ too.

Throughout the course of the internship, as well as gaining wisdom and knowledge from Jess and Steph, I hope to be able to contribute useful work and learn how to become a valued member of a PR team. I am hoping that the internship will give me the skills necessary to be able to successfully seek out a more permanent position in the PR industry and gain experience that is transferable within a variety of job roles.

I’m very happy and grateful to have been given such a great opportunity, and I’m looking forward to working with Jess and Steph, as well as learning more about their roles and clients they work with.
