Delivering 29 meals to maternity units across the country: The Coconut Tree celebrates Leap Day by giving back  

The Coconut Tree (TCT), an authentic Sri Lankan restaurant group with eight sites across the UK, celebrated this leap year by delivering 29 meals on the 29th of February to maternity units across the country.  

As a way to give a little extra on this bonus day, TCT wanted to celebrate the workers bringing the next generation of ‘leaplings’ (those born on the Feb 29) into the world. ‘Leaplings’ and the amazing teams that deliver them are especially close at heart for the team as one of the Co Founder’s mothers was born on February 29. 

The meals included TCT’s signature small plates filled with uniquely Sri Lankan flavours, ranging from Kotthus to Sambols. TCT teams hand delivered the 232 meals to staff on maternity wards at: 

• Bristol (Glos Rd): Southmead Hospital 

• Bristol (The Triangle): St Michael  

• Bath: Royal United Hospital  

• Reading: Royal Berkshire Hospital 

• Oxford: John Radcliff maternity ward  

• Bournemouth: Royal Bournemouth Hospital 

• Cheltenham: Cheltenham General Hospital 

• Birmingham: Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital 

Rashintha Rodrigo, Operations Director and Co-Founder, comments, “My mother is a leapling, having only technically had fifteen birthdays, and our roots are so important to us at TCT. So, we thought what better way to celebrate Mum and give back to the community than to offer a little something to the staff working hard this 29th to bring the next generation of leaplings into the world.”  

As well as giving extra to its local communities, TCT offered extra to its customers. People who visited a restaurant on leap day were offered a bonus dish, compliments of the chef. All enjoyed a classic TCT favourite and got to try something new with this extra dish on the house, personally selected by TCT’s wonderful Sri Lankan chefs.
